The Destroid Spartan was designed to maximize flexibility in all the ways the Tomahawk was designed to maximize firepower. Though still equipped with a formidable missile armament, the Spartan lacked the punch from guns, and its laser and gun cluster were mainly intended for defensive purpose. Instead, the Spartan was meant to be able to be similar in capability to a Veritech Valkyrie in Battloid mode, including carrying a gunpod, but with far heavier armor.

Technical Specifications

Model: MBR-07-Mk. II Spartan

Height: 11.2 meters (36.75 feet)

Weight: 28.9 metric tons (empty), 35.5 metric tons (fully loaded)

Armor: Composite (Reactive Armor in some versions)

Power Plant: Fusion reactor

Propulsion: Ground propulsion via legs, no flight capabilities

Crew: 1 pilot, 1 co-pilot

ARMAMENT

  • 2 x light lasers, located in a turret on the top of the mecha
  • 2 x Missile launchers in the shoulder, each carrying 12 short-range heavy missiles
  • 1 x Gun cluster in the center torso containing:
  • - 1 x 32 mm autocannon
  • - 1 x 180mm direct-fire mortar
  • - 1 x light laser
  • - 1 x flamethrower
  • - 12.7 mm machine gun

Role and Function

Role: The Destroid Spartan is primarily designed as an artillery and close-combat support unit. It serves as a versatile and heavily armed platform capable of both direct fire and missile bombardment.

Function: Deployed for defensive purposes, it provides fire support for other units and engages enemy mecha and aircraft. It can operate in urban, terrestrial, and limited aquatic environments.

Design Features

Mobility: While it lacks flight capabilities, the Destroid Spartan is designed for stability and firepower, able to traverse rough terrain and provide a solid defensive line.

Versatility: With its multiple weapon systems, it can engage a variety of targets from other mecha to fortifications and aircraft.

Defensive Systems: It includes advanced targeting systems, radar, and limited ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) to protect against enemy detection and missile attacks.

Historical and Cultural Context

Origin: The Destroid Spartan is a product of the fictional Robotech Defense Force, created to defend humanity against alien threats.

Appearances: It is prominently featured in various battles throughout the Robotech series, particularly in the Macross Saga.

Variants: Different models and upgrades of the Destroid series exist, each tailored for specific combat roles, including the Defender (anti-aircraft), Phalanx (long-range missile bombardment), and Tomahawk (general purpose).

In-Universe Impact

Tactical Use: Often used in concert with Valkyrie fighters and other mecha to create a balanced force capable of dealing with various threats.

Deployment: Widely deployed in ground engagements, often seen in defensive perimeters around key installations and cities.

The mecha is equipped with vernier thrusters, making it capable of limited space operations. In most cases, the mecha was used on the deck of the SDF-1, and its capacity to maneuver in zero-gee was limited to propelling itself back toward the ship's deck, if it is ever knocked off.

Legacy

The Destroid Spartan remains one of the iconic mecha in the Robotech universe, representing the heavy-duty, ground-based firepower that complements the more agile and versatile Valkyrie fighters.

These specifications and roles highlight the importance of the Destroid Spartan in the Robotech series, emphasizing its utility and firepower in defending against alien invasions and supporting human forces in large-scale conflicts.

Operational History

Deployment:
The Phalanx is primarily deployed as part of Earth's Robotech Defense Force, used in a defensive role against aerial threats and incoming missile attacks.

Tactics:
Typically used in concert with other Destroid units and Veritech fighters to provide a layered defense network.

Design and Development

Developed By:
The United Earth Government's Robotech Defense Force.

Purpose:
To provide a mobile and heavily armed anti-aircraft platform capable of intercepting and destroying enemy missiles and aircraft at various ranges.

The Destroid Phalanx is notable for its specialized role, focusing solely on missile-based weaponry to deliver devastating volleys against aerial threats, making it an essential part of any defensive grid in the Robotech universe.

Like the Defender, the Destroid Phalanx was based on the chasis of the MBR-04 Destroid Tomahawk. First designed and deployed aboard the SDF-1, the Phalanx was intended to serve as a walking missile battery, capable of delivering air defense missiles to protect the SDF-1 from Zentraedi attacks. Late in the First Robotech War, this mecha was refit with reflex missiles and used in the final massive attack against Dolza's fortress. After the First Robotech War, surviving mecha were dispersed to protect airbases in New Macross and near-by cities, like Monument.

The mecha is equipped with vernier thrusters, making it capable of limited space operations. In most cases, the mecha was used on the deck of the SDF-1, and its capacity to maneuver in zero gravity was limited to propelling itself back toward the ship's deck, if it is ever knocked off.

Zentraedi Power Armor Suit Quadrono Battalion - Botoru Battalion

Zentraedi Power Armor Suit Quadrono Battalion - Botoru Battalion

The Male Power Armor, is a powered suit which surrounds the Zentraedi pilot and functions as a powered exo-skeleton.  The Male Power Armor is issued to either Zentraedi Officer's or combat veterans.  Heavily armed, the Male Power Armor has a particle beam cannon for which the pilots like to use to attack RDF forces at long range.  The unit is one of the most heavily armored Zentraedi unit and will take numerous direct strikes, which would destroy lesser Zentraedi mecha.  The Male Power Armor has full flight capability and can operate as easily in space, in the air or on the ground.

Robotech/Macross Takatoku VF-S1

Robotech/Macross Takatoku VF-S1

Takatoku 1/55 was one of the original line of toys created by Takatoku Toys made to promote the Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series and later The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie. Bandai currently makes reissues.

VF-S1 FIGHTER MODE

VF-S1

Shōji Kawamori and Kazutaka Miyatake pitched their ideas to Takatoku Toys. One major obstacle during the designing of the transforming toys was a way to swing the two rear fuselage pieces to the front to become the legs. Eventually, the legs were hinged onto the cockpit by two metal parts, although this cut down show-accuracy, it made them the a pinnacle of toy engineering in that era, the kind of toy engineering that wouldn't be seen until the late 80s and early 90s. To this day, a lot of VF-1 Valkyrie toys use the same technique to bring the legs to the front. A notable gimmick of these toys are the spring-loaded landing gear. In the wake of Takatoku’s collapse, Matsushiro, the company that had been originally contracted to design the 1/55 VF-1, acquired the rights to the mold. Hasbro contracted Matsushiro to manufacture the 1/55 toy as part of The Transformers toyline, and re-branded the toy as "Jetfire". Shortly thereafter Matsushiro also hit financial hard times and Bandai acquired many of Takatoku’s assets from Matsushiro including the 1/55 VF-1 mold.

BATTLOID  MODE

Kawamori told Takatoku to time their releases in accordance to the anime's release. The first toy to be released was the VF-1J in the November of 1982, this was because the VF-1J was the protagonist's main mecha for the first arc of the series. By the December of that year, they had already sold around 20 0000 1/55 scale VF-1 Valkyrie toys.

Field Commander of the Veritech Fighter Squadrons

Robotech was one of my all time favourites cartoons when I was a kid. The story line was very unique for me compared to other cartoons at the time. Unlike Transformers that are sentient beings, these mecha you can fly and transform. What was even more cool for me is that they could even transform in three modes (Fighter, Guardian,Battloid). It was like you can be a Transformer yourself.

Roy Fokker - Ace Fighter Pilot

The leader of the veritech fighter squadrons attached to the SDF-1, Roy Fokker was the premier fighter pilot in the Robotech Defense Force. Fokker first gained fame by shooting down 108 enemy planes during the Global War and subsequent conflicts. Fokker was called back to duty by Admiral Donald Hayes and became the top test pilot for Project Valkyrie, which led to the creation of the transformable veritech fighter. As commander of the renowned Skull Squadron, Roy maintained his reputation among his fellow pilots, as his squadron earned distinction in battle after battle with the Zentraedi forces.

From an early age, Roy had a strong love of flying. His father Dan Fokker was a close friend and squadron mate of Mitchell Hunter during the final years of the Vietnam War. Dan was later killed in a classified mission for the Navy, and Mitchell Hunter assumed guardianship of Roy. From then on, Roy grew up with Hunter and his young son Rick and flew for their Flying Circus aerobatic team. The two boys grew very close. That relationship is severely tested when Roy leaves the Flying Circus to fight in the Global War, and later joins the Veritech development project on Macross Island.

Roy inherited many of his father's daredevil aspects, including a cavalier attitude towards women. A playboy for much of his early flying career, his life is changed when he meets a young air control officer named Claudia Grant.

Roy tries to mend his relationship with young Rick Hunter by inviting him to the launch of the SDF-1 on Macross Island. When the First Robotech War breaks out, Roy influences Rick to join the Robotech forces and follow in his footsteps as a fighter pilot. A truly inspirational figure, Roy becomes a mentor to Rick and has leaves a lasting impression on many members of the Robotech Defense Force.

Back of Matchbox Package:

Roy Fokker
Age: 30
Rank: Lieutenant Commander

Heroic commander of the famed "Skull Squadron" assigned the monumental task of defending SDF-1. He is the classic definition of a hero. He is also able to transcend his heroic mold to be human and compassionate. He likes to tease his friends especially Rick Hunter, and create a feeling of general camaraderie. His raw courage and skill as a fighter pilot is matched only by Maximillian Sterling.
