The Destroid Defender is a classic example of the blending of military technology and science fiction, showcasing advanced concepts in robotics and weaponry designed for a futuristic battlefield. The Destroid Defender is a mecha from the Robotech/Macross series, known for its anti-aircraft capabilities and distinct design.

General Information

Designation: ADR-04-Mk X Destroid Defender (AKA Raidar X)

Role: Anti-Aircraft Destroid

Universe: Robotech (Macross in the original Japanese series)

Dimensions and Weight

Height: 10.8m (approximately 38 feet)

Weight: 21.7 tons (dry), 27.1 tons (loaded)

Crew

Pilot: 1 operator

Armament

Main Weapons:
Four 78 mm MBW-2 anti-aircraft autocannons: These are mounted on the arms of the Defender and are the primary weapons, designed for engaging aerial targets.

One shoulder-mounted missile launcher: This launcher typically contains 24 short-range missiles for additional firepower.

Performance

Powerplant: One Rolls-Royce BF-10A fusion reactor

Maximum Speed: 98 kph loaded

Operational Range: The fusion reactor provides a virtually unlimited operational range on the battlefield, with the limiting factors being ammunition and maintenance needs.

Sensor Systems

Radar and Targeting Systems: Equipped with advanced radar and targeting systems to detect and track multiple airborne targets simultaneously, providing precise targeting data for its autocannons and missiles.

Deployment

Operational Use: The Destroid Defender is primarily used in defensive roles, protecting strategic locations such as bases, ships, and cities from aerial threats. It is not designed for direct combat against ground targets or other mecha.

Notable Features

Design: The Defender's design emphasizes its anti-aircraft role, with its arm-mounted autocannons allowing for a wide range of motion and rapid firing capabilities.

Mobility: While not as mobile as some other mecha in the Robotech universe, its moderate speed and heavy firepower make it a formidable opponent in defensive operations.

Background

Development: The Destroid series, including the Defender, was developed by the United Earth Government to provide versatile and powerful ground-based mecha capable of various combat roles. The Defender, in particular, was tailored to counter the overwhelming aerial superiority of alien invaders encountered during the events of the Robotech series.

Visual Appearance

Color Scheme: Typically painted in military green or camouflage colors, depending on the deployment environment.

Distinctive Features: Its four-barreled autocannon arms and sturdy, angular design make it easily recognizable among the Destroid lineup.

The Destroid Defender was the first of two mecha to be derived from the Tomahawk chasis. Equipped with four long-range 78mm anti-aircraft guns, this mecha was intended to defend airbases and the large spacecraft of the early Earth forces from enemy attacks. These weapons were extremely powerful, and coupled with the extensive radar suite with which the mecha was equipped, this allowed the Defender to engage and destroy threats at great ranges, especially in space.

The mecha is equipped with vernier thrusters, making it capable of limited space operations. In most cases, the mecha was used on the deck of the SDF-1, and its capacity to maneuver in zero gravity was limited to propelling itself back toward the ship's deck, if it is ever knocked off.

Developed By:
The United Earth Government's Robotech Defense Force.

Purpose:
To provide a mobile and heavily armed anti-aircraft platform capable of intercepting and destroying enemy missiles and aircraft at various ranges.

The Destroid Phalanx is notable for its specialized role, focusing solely on missile-based weaponry to deliver devastating volleys against aerial threats, making it an essential part of any defensive grid in the Robotech universe.

Like the Defender, the Destroid Phalanx was based on the chasis of the MBR-04 Destroid Tomahawk. First designed and deployed aboard the SDF-1, the Phalanx was intended to serve as a walking missile battery, capable of delivering air defense missiles to protect the SDF-1 from Zentraedi attacks. Late in the First Robotech War, this mecha was refit with reflex missiles and used in the final massive attack against Dolza's fortress. After the First Robotech War, surviving mecha were dispersed to protect airbases in New Macross and near-by cities, like Monument.

The mecha is equipped with vernier thrusters, making it capable of limited space operations. In most cases, the mecha was used on the deck of the SDF-1, and its capacity to maneuver in zero gravity was limited to propelling itself back toward the ship's deck, if it is ever knocked off.

ROBOTECH Officer's Battlepod Zentraedi Field Command Mecha

YouTube:

The Officer's Battlepod is issued to most higher officers in the Zentraedi armed forces, when they are in the field commanding forces of Regult Battlepods. Both in space and on the ground, the Glaug offers its pilots a heavy armament, excellent mobility and adequate protection. Usually, this mecha is colored in a white/grey scheme, with ochre canopy and feet.

Although the Officer's BP is large and not thickly armored, its protection is superior compared to that of the standard Battlepod. This is partly because it is thicker, but mostly because the Officer's BP is better at deflecting incoming fire due to its streamlining. It also has a heavy cannon armament, with three beam cannons, including a large, long-range cannon on top, and four smaller projectile weapons in the chin and in the arms. In addition, there is a 'last ditch' missile battery with six missiles.

The Officer's Battlepod is both a capable ground fighter and an effective space fighter. In the latter role, its four main engines and numerous smaller engines make it quite nimble. In addition, the mecha can travel short distances under water, usually to and from Zentraedi dropships. In combat against human mecha, the heavy armament and mobility often offset the lesser armor.

Robotech/Macross Takatoku VF-S1

Robotech/Macross Takatoku VF-S1

Takatoku 1/55 was one of the original line of toys created by Takatoku Toys made to promote the Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series and later The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? movie. Bandai currently makes reissues.

VF-S1 FIGHTER MODE

VF-S1

Shōji Kawamori and Kazutaka Miyatake pitched their ideas to Takatoku Toys. One major obstacle during the designing of the transforming toys was a way to swing the two rear fuselage pieces to the front to become the legs. Eventually, the legs were hinged onto the cockpit by two metal parts, although this cut down show-accuracy, it made them the a pinnacle of toy engineering in that era, the kind of toy engineering that wouldn't be seen until the late 80s and early 90s. To this day, a lot of VF-1 Valkyrie toys use the same technique to bring the legs to the front. A notable gimmick of these toys are the spring-loaded landing gear. In the wake of Takatoku’s collapse, Matsushiro, the company that had been originally contracted to design the 1/55 VF-1, acquired the rights to the mold. Hasbro contracted Matsushiro to manufacture the 1/55 toy as part of The Transformers toyline, and re-branded the toy as "Jetfire". Shortly thereafter Matsushiro also hit financial hard times and Bandai acquired many of Takatoku’s assets from Matsushiro including the 1/55 VF-1 mold.

BATTLOID  MODE

Kawamori told Takatoku to time their releases in accordance to the anime's release. The first toy to be released was the VF-1J in the November of 1982, this was because the VF-1J was the protagonist's main mecha for the first arc of the series. By the December of that year, they had already sold around 20 0000 1/55 scale VF-1 Valkyrie toys.

I finally have Khyron to my Robotech collection. I am a little sad it took so long to find him. I guess better late than never.

BIGMANILA

Khyron Commander of Botoru Battalion

Khyron "the Backstabber" was the leader of the Seventh Mechanized Space Division of the Zentraedi. During the First Robotech War, Khyron was put in charge of a sub-section of forces in the attack against the SDF-1. He would often act against orders, putting the craft in danger causing Breetai to force him and his men back from battle.

Khyron - Right Side

After a brief alliance with the humans to ensure the destruction of Dolza's Main Fleet, Khyron assumed a relentless mission of vengeance for his defeats and swore to destroy the SDF-1. He was the leader of the Malcontent, a sect of Zentraedi who wished to return to battle and attacked the Humans on the planet relentlessly.

Khyron - Front

Khyron first appeared during Breetai's operation on Mars. Summoned to ambush the SDF-1, despite the protests of Exedore, his ships folded directly into the path of Breetai's fleet and rammed them. Khyron had made a bet with his lieutenant Grel that they would only hit three ships while Grel claimed they would hit more. When they hit four ships, Grel boasted to Khyron over open channels, much to Breetai's annoyance. Khyron deployed his army to the surface and prepared to ambush the fortress. However, his own temperament threw a wrench in the operation, and the SDF-1 successfully countered him and escaped.

BACK OF CARD

ZENTRAEDI ENEMY

Age: Undetermined

Rank: Zentraedi Warlord

Khyron is the most insidious warlord in the entire Zentraedi Fleet. He is a glory-hungry opportunist who will stop at nothing to to achieve his ends. He has great contentempt for his superior officers and views the entire "quest for the SDF-1" as a massive waste of time. He grows to hate the Micronians (humans) who have gained control of the massive Battle Fortress.

Opposed to peace as a concept and especially peace with humanity, Khyron attempted to interfere in the peace process between Gloval and Breetai. He would send a large squadron of fighter pods to attack the SDF-1, only for Breetai to gun them down. Afterward, when an alliance was secured between the Zentraedi Defectors and the SDF-1, Breetai contacted both Azonia and Khyron to ask for their support. While Azonia pledged to fight Dolza, Khyron declared that he intended to flee. Breetai accepted this, saying he hadn't been counting on Khyron's support anyway, and abruptly cut the transmission. Khyron sent a final warning to Breetai, stating that they would be destroyed if they tried to confront Dolza.

Khyron Officers Battle Pod

As the final battle of the First Robotech War began, he and his own troops observed the fighting from afar. He watched the broadcast of Lynn Minmei, whose performance was throwing the Zentraedi into disarray and boosting the morale of the allied fleet. He and his men were unaffected either way, but he found Minmei amusing and when it became clear that the SDF-1 had a chance at victory, his forces engaged Dolza. As a result, he survived the end of the First Robotech War, though his temporary alliance with the SDF-1 ended and he resumed plans to destroy it.

After the War

In the years after the First Robotech War, Khyron hid on Earth in various locations alongside Azonia and Grel. As Zentraedi who found themselves no longer able to live among Humanity wandered into the wasteland, Khyron would recruit them to fight alongside him as he plotted the destruction of the SDF-1, marking the beginning of the Malcontent Uprisings. One of these recruits was a former flag officer by the name of Zeraal, who would grow to become a fierce warlord himself. The two of them, while united in their hatred of humanity, did not see eye-to-eye on most issues. Khyron largely focused his attacks on the SDF-1 and her crew, while Zeraal conquered the wastelands and was the primary target of Base-6.

Death

In January 2014, as the SDF-2 was finishing construction and the Robotech Expeditionary Force was preparing to launch, Khyron launched one final assault against New Macross City. While Zeraal pledged his full support to Khyron's attack, it was merely a ruse to convince Khyron to throw himself against the full might of the RDF. From the outset, Khyron's attack was doomed, but he refused to go quietly. In a suicide run against the ship, he sent his cruiser flying into the battle fortress, killing everyone on board both ships -- including him. This attack coupled with the Zeraal Campaign, Crystal War, and sporadic other uprisings delayed the REF's launch for nine years.
